Marine Corps Times map goes interactive

Bookmark and Share

Last week, while following the coverage of all the unrest in the world after the attacks on U.S. embassies, I came across this map that showed where protests were happening globally.

I was reminded of our Marine Corps Times deployment map, and thought we should illustrate that information the same way.

Every employee here at Marine Corps Times has spent their fair share of time gathering information on where Marines are around the world. But I always thought it was something that would be especially cool if it was digital — something that allowed our readers to interact with the information more.

So here’s our first run at showing where Marines are all over the globe in a digital format. I’m going to work to develop this further, putting photos, videos and story links into the boxes to illustrate what it is Marines are out there doing week-to-week.

If you have suggestions on how we can make it better, we’d love to hear them. We’ll be working on making adjustments to this every week just like we do in the paper. Only in a digital space, we have more freedom to experiment.

Please feel free to email your thoughts or ideas to

    Dear Vicki,

There are no pinpoint locations here. This is information that Marine Corps public affairs has released for years, updated as they’re cleared to release it by operational units. It isn’t all-inclusive, but it offers a new-age glimpse at some of the many things our Marine Corps does.

This is very upsetting to me. This is information that does not need to be published and also information that every military family is encouraged strongly not to share. Please consider the safety of our Marines and remove this from your site!

Kelly — this is information that Marine Corps Times receives directly from Marine Corps public affairs officers that is cleared for publication. We do not receive the detailed information that families get.

This is simply countries and regions. This map has been running in our paper for years, and we never publish anything that pinpoints the exact location of any Marines. This is simply a broad look that is available on DVIDS, Marine Corps’ Facebook pages and other public outlets.

    Hope that helps.

You can google just about any unit and get this information, and more.

As an honorably discharged former Marine sergeant during the Vietnam era, I believe I have the right to say there’s only five of those blue map pins that have any business being there, and they’re all on U.S. territory.

Although it is great to see all the things that can be done parents are alarmed at the fact that this information is so readliy available to the puplic on any level. At the same time America is great as well as intelligent, the exact locations and other information is highly protected, rest assured. Just a thought.

As a former Marine embassy guard and a founding member of the Marine Embassy Guard Assoc. (MEGA) I do not find anything reported on this map that provides any potential enemy any intel of value. On the other hand, I think it is a very good thing for US citizens to appreciate in how many countries US Marines are currently deployed.
