Air Force hero Tech. Sgt. Israel Del Toro Jr. will be one of 30 service members who will be honored at the 2013 Major League Baseball’s All-Star Game, which start on July 16.
“The hard part about it is I was told on July 3 and I couldn’t tell anyone until it came out officially,” said Del Toro, who suffered burns over 80 percent of his body from a roadside bomb blast in Afghanistan.
Now a tactical air control party instructor, Del Toro was nominated by his sister and voted by his fellow service members to be the military’s representative for the Chicago White Sox.
He and the other service members will be recognized at the start of the All-Star Game. He will also visit the National Sept. 11 Memorial & Museum in New York, the Intrepid Air and Space Museum, the Home Run Derby and he will have brunch at the Empire State Building.
“You dream about it as a little kid, going to one of those things and just having the opportunity to go and being selected by my peers to represent the White Sox, that’s just awesome and amazing,” Del Toro said.
