Veterans Day Run slated for 40 cities
Registration is now open for the third annual National Veterans Day Run with events slated in 40 cities across the country. Designed to raise money for veterans groups while honoring those still serving, organizers are also offering runners who can’t make it to an event a chance to participate on their own in what’s been dubbed a “virtual run.”
Events on Nov. 10 and 11 include a 1K run/walk for children, a 5K run and an 11K run. Veterans and active-duty troops, along with their immediate family members, pay special reduced-rate entry fees.
Additionally, an inaugural National Veterans Day Run half-marathon will be hosted in San Jose, Calif.
“2013 is a milestone year for the National Veterans Day Run,” says Keri Mullins, national director of operations for the series, in a news release. She expects more than 25,000 runners to participate this year.
“Our virtual running event also makes it possible for families to connect with their loved ones overseas,” says Mullins. Now in its third year, the virtual run was born out of previous events in which dozens of runners in Afghanistan opted to “run alongside” family members.
“When signing up for remote participation, the runners will receive their official race bib and be able to record their times in order to participate with their families,” Mullins says. “With runners participating on the same date around the globe, we are creating a commemorative event that showcases our love and commitment to the men and women who are willing to sacrifice their lives for our freedom.”
The event, which started in nine cities in 2011, has quadrupled in size. Last year’s National Veterans Day Run events raised nearly $10,000 for veterans programs.
This year, organizers are partnering with the charity Folds of Honor, which provides educational scholarships and other assistance to military families.
