OR sneak peek: Suunto introduces running-specific Ambit2 R GPS watch, starting at $249

Get excited, it’s new Ambit time and this one is for you, runners.

This time around Suunto has developed a running-specific watch — called the Ambit2 R — which will have GPS and an accelerometer.

It won’t have the weather features of the Ambit2, but it will have a price tag that is half that of the pricier model.

Like the other Ambits, the R will have three GPS cycle rate settings which will determine the battery life. On the R, at once-per-second you should get 8 hours of battery; at once-per-5 seconds you’ll get 12 hours and at once-per-60 seconds you’ll get 25 hours. (Compared to 16, 24 and 50 hours respectively with the Ambit2.

The R will also have Suunto’s “Fusion Fused Speed” feature, which uses the accelerometer – using the motion of your arm swing – to track distance. If you temporarily lose satellite signal you won’t lose distance.

Look for it in the softer-band white or black, starting in March; $249 or $299 with heart rate monitor.

Suunto has also dropped the prices on the Ambit2 S. Get one (graphite, lime, red or white) for $350; $400 with heart rate monitor.
